The wide brown land, - now green
You know very well that Australian Chauvinism consists of fierce patriotism rather than a prejudiced belief in the superiority of one's own gender ?
This patriotism was first identified by Dorothea McKellar when she wrote these beautiful lines, "Core of my heart" in 1907.

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains
Of ragged mountain ranges
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terrors-
The wide brown land for me !

Recently the drought has given way to flooding rains and now we are blessed with,

The love of field and coppice
Of green and shaded lanes
Of ordered woods and gardens
Is running in your veins-
Strong love of grey-blue distance,
Brown streams and soft dim skies--
I know but cannot share it.
My love is otherwise.

Everyone loves his own country.
Airplanes allow us to trip in others countries and we learn to love them but our country stays
in our heart and soul and the blood which flows in our veins.

Of course I know this poem, I've read it many times and find it extraordinarily moving.

I noticed you also extracted part of it in your blog introduction :
WELCOME TO THE WIDE BROWN LAND, A LAND OF SWEEPING PLAINS, OF RAGGED MOUNTAIN RANGES, OF DROUGHTS AND FLOODING RAINS."

I'd never seen Dorothea McKellar's original hand-written work? Thanks for showing it.

The lush green colours you show today are an amazing contrast to how we usually think of South Australia.
