The French Horn.
Philip Hall is currently the 'Principal Horn' of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra which was founded as a 17 player radio ensemble in 1936.
The sound of the French Horn is sometimes majestic and triumphant, and sometimes soft and slightly melancholic.
However, you may enjoy hearing also the French Horn at the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert in 1991 : conducted by the great Claudio Abbado. Here he is conducting the popular
Radetzky March by Johann Strauss.

This is a lovely photo! It looks as if the horn has a lot of notes left in it to play! Who owns it?

What a beautiful photo! The red shows off the richness of the French Horn. I also enjoyed the video since one doesn't often see the facial expression of the conductor! Fun!

that is one good looking horn. And the Radetzky March was lovely, too. All the musicians were men--hmmm.

It has a French owner, but I am not sure; sorry.
Kate, I agree, the faces of the conductors are always very expressive. It is their signature.
Scout, I actually looked earlier, and I think that I must agree with you. I shall attempt a better balance next time.

ANYWAY.....I was going to say bravo for your post, M B. What a magnificent picture and it is obvious you are a man of style and refinement. I first heard Radetzky as a child ,loved it then and still adore it. Hope you enjoyed the Classic Concerto 100 you listened to. Best wishes to Mme B please...hope she is enjoying her readers' Digest classics.
